First of all, incase you didn’t know, comets are huge balls of ice and rock. This particular comet officially named 2012 S1 but nicknamed Silver Surfer is 2 miles wide and is currently passing Saturn. The great news is, despite the title of this article which I carefully created to f*ck with you, the comet is NOT going to hit earth, but it will get very close. In fact, it will be so close that some scientist believe it will be brighter than a full moon, potentially being one of the brightest comets in history. Unfortunately for all you Mayan apocalypse lovers, this comet isn’t going to end the world. It will however create quite a show in the sky from November 2013 to January 2014.
I’ll be following this comet and I’ll be sure to let you know more about it and when to look up. Make sure to tell all your friends about this because this kind of stuff doesn’t happen often. In fact, the last time it happened was in 1680 (lol), so do your friends and I a favor and share this article on Facebook and Twitter so they don’t miss a historical, once in a lifetime light show in the sky.
The image above is a Herschel image of the eagle nebula. Basically whats going on here is a star is forming in the eagle nebula by self emitting VERY cold gases and dust (minus 442 degrees fahrenheit) that provide the material needed to form a star.
The image above is an enormous section of the milky way galaxy taken by NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE.
The image above is of the outskirts of Saturns rings and 4 of Saturns moons. The most famous of the 4 is Titan which is the big one in the background. The moon that appears just above the rings in the center of the image is Saturns moon Dione. The small oval shaped moon just beyond the rings to the right of the image is Pandora and to the left, embedded in the rings is the smallest of Saturns moons named Pan.
The image above is an image of mars taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRise) camera. The area covered in the image is approximately one kilometer. All the patterns you see are sand dunes formed by wind trapped in an impact crater.
Ladies and Gentlemen this is called “Earthrise”. This photo was taken from the moon by a camera aboard an Apollo ship (I think).
This image was forsure taken during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 so I’m guessing the one above this was as well. This is the view Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin (the astronauts) had while they looked at earth (400,000 kilometers away) from the moon. Before I kick the bucket, I will explore outer space, land on the moon, and view this view for myself.
This image was taken by a camera aboard Rosetta as it approached earth from deep space. Rosetta was approximately 600,000 kilometers away from earth when the photograph was snapped.
